Thinking about fall, the first thing that comes to mind after Halloween is Pumpkin, be it Jack-O'-Lanterns, pumpkin pie, or pumpkin spice latte! This large, round, vibrant orange fruit got its name from the Greek word 'Pepon' which means 'large melon'. The word “Pumpkin” itself comes from the Greek Pepon, meaning “large melon.” The word traveled through French, where it became Pepon, to England there the name changed to Pumpion. It was the American colonists that gave the name Pumpkin. In some places, for example, Australia, Pumpkin can refer to any winter squash at all, thus making it interchangeable. They are cultivated largely in China, India, Russia, Ukraine, the United States, Bangladesh, Iran, Turkey, Mexico, Italy, and Cuba. One thing about Pumpkin that stands out is that all parts of the Pumpkin are edible: Skin, Leaves, Flowers, Pulp, Seeds, and even the Stem. According to food historian, K.T. Achaya, Pumpkins are a part of Indian food from ancient times and grown on rivers' banks in village outskirts. Xuan Zang, a Chinese traveler, mentioned pumpkin, ginger, mustard, and melon in parts of India between 629 and 645 AD. Ibn Battuta noticed that Pumpkins were the only plant that grew in the dry river beds in the Sindh Desert. A fun fact about Pumpkins is that native Americans dried strips of them and would weave them into mats. Though being a fruit, the nutritional value of pumpkins is very similar to that of vegetables. Loaded with vitamins and minerals, pumpkins are low in calories count.
